Description

Want to help save the bees? Transform your traditional lawn into a thriving bee lawn with our Bee Lawn Seed Mix! This specially formulated mix is perfect for those looking to create a pollinator habitat while still enjoying the function and recreation associated with a conventional lawn.

Due to loss of forage, increased weed pressure, pesticide use, and the introduction of pests and diseases, our pollinators need your help! Each bag of our Bee Lawn Seed Mix, developed by the University of Minnesota, has been shown to support more than 60 bee species.

This bee lawn mix is ideal for home lawns, offering a long bloom time and providing essential resources for species of pollinators. By incorporating plants like Dutch white clover and creeping thyme, you can create a beautiful and functional lawn that also supports the ecosystem.

Planting

The Right Time to Plant on Lawns

Spring, fall, or dormant periods are the best times for planting this bee lawn mix. Late summer to early fall is especially optimal as it provides the best conditions for germination. Compared to spring, the reduced competition from annual weeds gives the plant the longest time to mature before summer stresses.

Installation

Overseeding (Interseeding)

  • Mow the existing lawn very short (scalping) to allow sunlight to reach the soil.
  • Overseed with a broadcast spreader to distribute the seed.

New Seeding

  • Removal of Existing Lawn: Dig up the existing lawn using a tiller or sod cutter.
  • Soil Preparation: Till the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Improve texture by adding organic matter and sand for clay soils, or compost, peat moss, or manure for sandy soils. Till again, to incorporate these amendments.
  • Apply an organic starter fertilizer.
  • Level the soil surface

Seeding

  • Spread seed using a broadcast or drop seed spreader.
  • Rake in or tamp the seed to ensure good “seed to soils” contact.
  • Mulch or blanket the area for best results.

Watering

Watering is the most critical step for the successful establishment of your bee lawn. Keep the ground moist until the seedlings are up and established (2 to 3 inches tall). Use a method of frequent light watering, not once-a-day drenching.

Management

Mowing frequency: once a week to once biweekly.

Mowing Height: 3 inches

LIMIT HERBICIDE AND INSECTICIDE USAGE! Herbicides and insecticides will damage your flowering plants and pollinating insects. There is no need to add Nitrogen fertilizer, as the Dutch white clover will fixate Nitrogen in lawns, helping your fine fescues thrive.
