Queen Cages

Queen cages are helpful beekeeping tools for several reasons, including safe transportation and introducing queen bees to their colony while protecting them from aggressive bystanders. However, introducing queens is often risky, even for the most experienced queen breeders. Make your beekeeping journey more manageable with our queen cages and accessories.

Importance of a Queen Cage

Queen cages serve multiple purposes; when bees do not recognize a queen as part of their hive, they often 'ball' her, aggressively attacking the cage in an attempt to harm her. These cages not only protect queen bees but also facilitate their acceptance within new colonies.

After the bees stop calling the queen cages, the cork will need to be manually removed to release the queen so she can start laying her eggs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a queen cage in my hive?

Installing a queen cage is simple: place the cage between the brood chamber frames, ensuring the worker bees have access to the candy plugs. The position should allow the workers to interact with the cage and acclimate to the new queens. Ensure the cage is secure in the frame and won't shift within the hive during the bees’ activity.

How long should a queen bee stay in the cage before being released?

Queens typically remain in the cages for 2-3 days as the bees adjust to their pheromone signatures. Once the bees have acclimated to the queen's presence, the cork will need to be removed from the cage to release the queen naturally into her new hive.

Can queen cages be reused?

Yes, many queen cages can be reused. Be sure to clean the cage thoroughly between uses, especially if it has passed through multiple colonies, to prevent the spread of diseases or contaminations.
